For ultimate reliability nothing beats running a wire.   Wired driveway alarms typically use a magnetic vehicle probe to detect moving vehicles.  The probe connects by way of wire to a control box which in turn can play a chime or alert.  In most cases the control box can also connect to an external dialer, email or text alert system, alarm system, automation system, strobe or chime.
